Sherwood Exports Ltd in conjunction with Dawson Furs have been trading in airdried possum skins for 20 years.

Mr Bruce Dawson, owner and manager of Dawson Furs takes provisions into the forest for the possum trappers via either Helicopter or jet boat and he also brings the possum skins out by the same means.  His main area includes The Urewera National Park and due to the isolation of parts of this area, helicopter and / or jet boat are the only means of getting in and out of the area.  This is the best method of transport to handle this terrain.

The other part of the Dawson catchment is through agents located in both the North and South Islands of New Zealand, enabling the procurement of possum skins on a large scale.

GRADING OF POSSUM SKINS
1STS.  Top quality full even fur with clear pelt, with some small spotting but no noticeable damage.  No repair should be needed.

2NDS.  Top quality full even fur.  Some small pelt spotting and minor fur damage, but not noticeable from the fur side.  Damage generally no greater than 1/4 inch in main pelt panel.  Little or no repair needed.

3RDS.  Full fur as with lsts and 2nds, though some damage may be up to 1/2 inch diameter in the main pelt panel.  This may be noticed from the fur side.  Some repair work may be needed.

4THS.  Uneven fur and damage.  These skins are usually described as having 50 - 75% unusable fur.  Used often for toy manufacture.
 

SIZES
LARGE - 20'' x 9" minimum
MEDIUM - 16'' - 20" x 8'' minimum.
SMALL - 12" - 16'' x 7'' minimum.
FOURTHS - ALL IN.

COLOURS
Greys: These include Redneck and rustys, pales and greys.
Darks: These include Red brown and Dark brown.

SHIPPING
1,000 skins per bale.  Up to 30 bales per 20ft container.
